WE SELL BANANAS

My gallerist wants nudes, vases, and bananas.
“Give me something I can sell,” he says. “We sell bananas.”

Indiana Hoover and Stowaway present:
WE SELL BANANAS, a group exhibition featuring 12 artists working in drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture.

Artists include: Charity Baker, Karin Campbell, June Gutman, Nick Herd, Zac Hoffman, Indiana Hoover, Peter Larsen, Jackson Lynch, Douglas Paisley, Dylan Riley, Blair Simmons, and Jeff Tocci.

“I’m flirting with a show about the dilemma of value, and the tension between ‘market friendly’ work and art made for the ‘sake of itself.’ The market will compel you to compromise in exchange for validation, but the reward is empty and the fruit is bad.

What I admire about the artists in this show is their commitment to their practice. Each individual has developed a line or language that’s able to communicate something essential. An intangible moment of recognition in which you see something about yourself reflected in the work of another. The juice is good.

I know I promised:
WE SELL BANANAS, ‘but we have no bananas today.’

Or maybe we do. What do I know?”
